Telegram code sent to another device? Why your SMS inbox may be empty

If Telegram says it sent a login code inside Telegram on another device, check that authenticated Telegram session rather than waiting for an SMS. Telegram can choose an in-app delivery route for a login. An SMS receiving service cannot read a message that Telegram delivered through its own app.

This is different from a text-message delivery failure. Before requesting another code or buying another number, identify which channel the login screen actually selected. A receiving number alone does not guarantee that Telegram will offer SMS for the login you are attempting.

Read the delivery message before troubleshooting

Telegram's official FAQ explains that a login code may be sent through Telegram if the account was recently used on another device. The FAQ also emphasizes keeping an account connected to a number you control. Those details make both the current channel and long-term number access relevant.

Read the screen literally. A message about another Telegram session means the destination is an app session. A message about SMS means the destination is a phone number. A request for a two-step verification password is a further account check, not an instruction to wait for a different SMS code.

If you have the other device

Inspect the authenticated session and use Telegram's own login instructions. Keep the destination and current login attempt together so you do not confuse a code from an earlier attempt with the present one. Do not forward codes into a team chat or send them to someone claiming to assist with the login.

After restoring access, review the account's security and recovery settings while you have a working session. If the number is temporary or rented, plan continued control or use Telegram's supported number-change process before receiving access ends. A successful login today does not establish a recovery route for next month.

If you do not have the other device

Follow the alternatives Telegram actually offers on the screen and in its official support guidance. Avoid assuming a hidden button, fixed waiting period or different number provider will force an SMS option. Availability of alternative channels can depend on the account and login state.

Do not use a newly purchased number to try to receive a code addressed to an older number. It is a different destination. If you are recovering an existing account, the recovery task is about that account's established methods, not choosing fresh receiving inventory.

Now imagine the screen explicitly says an SMS was sent to the assigned number. That is a different case: compare the destination, expiry and message history, then use the missing-code checklist. Keeping these cases separate avoids paying for replacement numbers that do not address the failure.
