How to enter an international phone number for SMS verification

·SMS.Red·Markdown

To enter a number for SMS verification, use the complete assigned number and follow the app's phone-field format. The most common mistake is duplicating the country code: choosing United States (+1) and then pasting another +1 into a field that expects only the national number.

Formatting determines where the request is addressed. It does not guarantee delivery or prove that the app accepts the number. Check the destination displayed by the app before requesting an SMS, especially when the form changes the number you pasted.

What E.164 means

E.164 is the international numbering standard commonly used to represent a phone number with its country code. A familiar display form starts with + followed by the country code and remaining digits, with no more than 15 digits overall. Twilio's E.164 reference explains the format and why a pattern match alone cannot prove that a number is valid.

For a US example, +12025550123 contains the country code 1 and a ten-digit national number. This is an illustrative number, not an allocated SMS.Red number and not a destination to test. For a real purchase, copy the value from your own order instead of constructing it from an area code.

Two phone fields that look similar but behave differently

A single international field may expect the whole number, including + and the country code. A split form may have a country dropdown and a second field for the national part. Some forms recognize an international paste and adjust the country selector; others do not.

After pasting, inspect both controls and any confirmation label. If the final destination appears to start +11 for a US number, check whether you have added the country code twice. If the country selector changes unexpectedly, correct it before sending rather than assuming the app will repair the number later.

A reliable copy-and-check workflow

  1. Purchase the intended service and wait until a number is assigned.
  2. Copy the complete number from that order. Keep the order open so you can compare it.
  3. Read the app's country selection and phone-field hint.
  4. Enter the complete number or national part as the form requires.
  5. Compare the resulting destination with your order, including the final digits.
  6. Request the SMS once the destination is correct and the receiving term is active.

Do not substitute a number from a public sample, screenshot, old order or support article. If you have several rentals, name or record them so the app and destination remain associated. A small labeling mistake can make a perfectly valid SMS look missing because you are watching the wrong order.

Spaces, prefixes and leading zeros

Some apps tolerate spaces or hyphens in a pasted number; others require digits in the national field. Follow the actual input instructions. International dialing prefixes such as 00 or 011 are not interchangeable with a + in every web form.

National trunk-prefix handling varies by country, so do not apply a blanket rule that deletes every leading zero. Use the assigned international value as your reference, and consult the app's own instructions when it transforms national input. SMS.Red's current public finder offers US inventory; a formatting example for another country is not a claim that that country is available in the catalog.

For developers building a phone field

Keep a canonical international value separate from the user's display formatting. Validate the selected region and resulting number using a maintained phone-number library rather than guessing the country from a fixed digit count. A syntactically plausible number still needs eligibility and delivery checks.

Test international paste into a split field, deletion of the country selector, keyboard navigation and preservation of the destination after an error. The OTP testing checklist covers the rest of the verification flow.

FAQ

Is +1 used only by the United States?

No. A shared country calling code is not sufficient to identify every number's jurisdiction. Choose the catalog country and use the complete number returned for that purchase.

Will correcting the format fix an unsupported-number error?

It may fix a formatting failure, but it does not change app policy. If the destination is correct and rejection remains, use the eligibility checklist.
