An unused-looking SMS order is not automatically refundable. Cancellation depends on the product, purchase age, message history and current order state. Check the order's available cancellation action or server-returned eligibility rather than assuming a missing code guarantees a refund.

SMS.Red distinguishes rental cancellation from one-time verification cancellation. The rental's documented time window should not be applied to OTP orders. Even when an order appears eligible, the server checks again when a cancellation request arrives.

## The current rental rule

The [SMS.Red rental documentation](https://sms.red/docs/ai/rentals.md) describes rental cancellation as available from 5 through 120 minutes after purchase, inclusive, provided no SMS has been received. Pending transfers or renewals and provider restrictions can also prevent cancellation. Inspect the actual order state before submitting a request.

For example, an order three minutes old is not yet inside that rental window. An order 30 minutes old with no received SMS may satisfy the age-and-message conditions, but other state checks still apply. An order that has already received a text should not be treated as an unused rental merely because the text did not complete your intended signup.

## Receiving a message and completing registration are different

The sending app can reject a code, require another challenge or refuse the number. Those outcomes do not mean the receiving service delivered no SMS. Read the full message history and the app's exact error before describing a purchase as unused.

This distinction is especially important when cancellation eligibility includes a no-SMS condition. A code that you did not copy, or a message without an automatically extracted code, is still a received message. The server's order record is the relevant state.

## What to check before canceling

1. Confirm whether the order is a rental or a one-time verification.
2. Inspect its purchase timestamp, current status and message history.
3. Read the current cancellation action or isCancelable field.
4. Consider any account that still depends on the destination; canceling the order does not update that account's recovery settings.
5. Submit one intended cancellation and inspect the resulting order state.

If you are uncertain whether the number is attached to an important account, resolve that dependency before ending receiving access. The [recovery checklist](https://sms.red/en/blog/temporary-number-account-recovery) covers destination changes and alternative methods.

## A timeout is not confirmation

For an API integration, a network timeout after a cancellation request leaves the outcome uncertain. Do not display “refunded” merely because the request was sent. Read the order again and reconcile its state. An empty successful response and a lost response are different observations.

The [errors and recovery guide](https://sms.red/docs/ai/errors-and-retries.md) explains why uncertain mutations require reconciliation. Refund accounting follows confirmed supplier cancellation and the original payer. Do not create your own compensating wallet credit or call a supplier directly to force a result outside the supported workflow.

## Order refunds and payment funding are separate

A canceled order and a wallet top-up are different transactions. Returning an eligible number's charge to the appropriate wallet does not, by itself, imply a cash withdrawal, reversal of a payment-method fee or refund of an entire deposit.

Read payment-method terms and the live wallet checkout when assessing funding cost. The [total-cost guide](https://sms.red/en/blog/sms-number-pricing-total-cost) separates number price, wallet deposit and funding commission. Do not buy a long term as a supposed risk-free trial unless its actual cancellation conditions fit your plan.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the 5–120-minute rental rule apply to OTP numbers?

Do not assume so. One-time verification eligibility is separately controlled by the server and exposed through the order's current state.

### Can I cancel a rental after receiving an SMS I did not need?

The documented rental rule requires no received SMS. Check the actual order's eligibility; the usefulness of a message to your signup does not make it unreceived.

### When should my app show a refund as complete?

After the supported workflow confirms the outcome and the relevant order/accounting state is known, not after an ambiguous or timed-out request.
